What Do You Mean That Isn’t A Snake?!

Yes, that does appear to be a slightly more than average amount of terrifying snake type creature. However, it is not. It is actually a caterpillar in a cocoon that just looks like a snake, because nature is a big bully that likes to trick us into being scared for no reason when we are wandering around in Trinidad. We all do that, right?

That is the Dynastor darius darius or, caterpillar in question, before it enters its creepy snake cocoon. The darius hangs its hat in that cocoon for 13 days before it emerges as a much less threatening butterfly. The cocoon most closely resembles the Gaboon pit viper, which doesn’t live anywhere near Trinidad. So there’s that. The theory behind why this particular caterpillar does this is simple: it’s scary as f*** and potential predators are not likely to mess with it. Thanks again, nature.
